Tungsten carbide is a chemical compound containing equal parts of tungsten and carbon atoms. In its most basic form, it is a fine gray powder, but it can be pressed and formed into shapes for use in industrial machinery, cutting tools, abrasives, armor-piercing rounds, other tools and instruments, and jewelry. Tungsten carbide is generally found in two main types of products: cemented carbides and coated carbides. Cemented carbides are composed of hard particles of tungsten carbide (WC) held together in a binder of cobalt or nickel-iron alloy. They are extremely hard and wear resistant but also brittle. Coated carbides have a layer of WC particles bonded to the surface of a steel substrate using heat and pressure. These tools are also very hard and wear resistant but not as brittle as cemented carbides.
