The extraction forceps is placed around the tooth at the base of the root. The beak of the forceps is then inserted into the socket and positioned so that the teeth on the beak fit snugly around the root of the tooth. Once in place, pressure is applied to the handles to close the jaws of the forceps and grip the tooth. The extraction process can then begin by gently rocking back and forth or by using a twisting motion.
It is important to apply consistent pressure when using extraction forceps so that you do not damage the surrounding teeth or tissues. If done correctly, extracting a tooth with an English pattern forcep should be a relatively easy process.
